National Parks Under Stress

National parks are some of the most beautiful places in the world. They are critical for preserving ecosystems and protecting wildlife. National parks can be sanctuaries for endangered species while also maintaining biodiversity through habitat conservation. Each park has natural, cultural, and historical significance, and each one serves as a place for public recreation and education. Every national park plays a vital role in conservation, which makes it more important than ever to support parks as the climate continues to change.

In 2024, national parks reached a record high of 331.8 million visitors. That number is higher than the population of the United States, according to the 2020 census.

The visitors spent $29 billion in areas surrounding the national parks, which generated a record $56.3 billion in economic output for the United States in 2024. All of this was done on a budget of only $3.8 billion, resulting in nearly $15 of economic output for every $1 spent.

Despite record visits and economic output, the federal government has continually reduced staffing for parks. National Park Service staffing shrank by 18.7% from 2010 to 2024 and by 24% from January 2025 to August 2025. Furthermore, an estimated $267 million was cut from national park funds by the passing of the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" in July 2025. All of this has resulted in a perfect storm, creating a massive $22.9 billion backlog of maintenance and repairs at national parks.

Now, more than ever, it is essential to support our national parks. As visitation and spending continue to increase, staffing and funding from the federal government decrease. This makes it harder for the National Park Service to protect our parks, preserve their history, conserve the environment, and ensure these spaces will be available for future generations to enjoy.

Prints for Parks is a way to support the National Park Service. A portion of the profits from each print sold is donated to the National Park Foundation.
